Healthy Squirrel is an educational food diary. It is not a medical device and it does not provide medical, nutritional, or dietetic advice. Please read this page before acting on anything the app tells you.
Not a substitute for professional care
Nothing in Healthy Squirrel diagnoses, treats, cures, or prevents any condition. It is not reviewed or approved by the FDA or any other regulator, and it has not been clinically validated. If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are taking medication, are recovering from an eating disorder, or are under 18, speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before changing what you eat, and follow their advice over the app's.
Never delay seeking medical help because of something you read here. If you think you're having a medical emergency, call your local emergency number.
Targets are formulas, not prescriptions
Your calorie target comes from the Mifflin-St Jeor equation applied to the height, weight, age, sex, and activity level you entered. Micronutrient targets come from published population reference intakes (such as the US Dietary Reference Intakes) for your age band and sex.
These are population averages. They do not account for:
- your medical history, medications, or supplements;
- pregnancy, breastfeeding, or any condition that changes what you need;
- absorption differences, allergies, intolerances, or genetic variation;
- how much you actually absorb from a food, as opposed to what's in it.
An individual's real requirements can sit well above or below a reference intake. Only a clinician who knows your history can tell you yours.
Nutrition numbers are estimates
Food data comes from third-party databases (USDA FoodData Central, Open Food Facts), from foods you enter yourself, and, for photo logging, from an AI model's visual estimate. Every one of those has error in it: databases contain mistakes, manufacturers reformulate products, portion sizes estimated from a photograph are guesses, and cooking changes both weight and nutrient content.
Do not rely on Healthy Squirrel where nutritional precision has medical consequences. That includes carbohydrate counting for insulin dosing, potassium or protein restriction in kidney disease, low-sodium regimes for heart failure, phenylalanine limits in PKU, vitamin K consistency on warfarin, and any therapeutic diet. Use the tools and figures your care team gives you.
Suggestions are pattern-matching
The Suggestions page compares your logged intake against your targets and names the gaps. It is a rule-based summary of the numbers you entered, it knows nothing about you beyond your diary, cannot detect a deficiency, and is not a screening tool. A low reading in the app means you logged less than a reference figure that week; it does not mean you are deficient. Only a blood test ordered by a clinician can establish that.
Upper limits shown for some nutrients refer to total daily intake from all sources including supplements, which the app does not track for you.
Tracking isn't right for everyone
For some people, logging food and weight makes eating harder rather than easier, and can feed disordered patterns. If tracking is increasing your anxiety about food, becoming compulsive, or pushing you to eat less than your body needs, please stop and talk to someone. There is no version of this app that's worth your health.
In the US, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7, call or text 988. For eating-disorder support specifically, the National Eating Disorders Association and the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders both list current support options on their sites. Outside the US, your national health service or a local eating-disorder charity can point you to help.
Your responsibility
You use Healthy Squirrel at your own risk, and decisions about what you eat remain yours. Healthy Squirrel accepts no liability for health outcomes arising from use of the app, to the extent the law allows, see the Terms of Service.
